Carlsbad Caverns National Park – New Mexico Underground

Much of New Mexico’s appeal comes from enormous skies and open landscapes. Carlsbad Caverns turns that experience upside down. Here, one of the state’s most extraordinary landscapes is hidden underground.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park protects an extensive cave system beneath the Chihuahuan Desert in southeastern New Mexico. The scale is difficult to appreciate until you are inside. Vast chambers and intricate formations make this much more than a quick roadside cave visit.

The Big Room

The Big Room is the cavern’s showpiece and one of the experiences most visitors remember. Instead of simply looking into a cave, you move through an enormous underground space filled with stalactites, stalagmites and other formations created over immense periods of time.

Depending on current access and your plans, there are different ways to experience the caverns. Check official National Park Service information before visiting for current entry requirements, reservations, tours and seasonal conditions.

Don’t ignore the desert above

It is easy to think only about what lies underground, but the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert is part of the national park experience too. Give yourself time to look at the landscape before or after entering the cave.

Plan it as an overnight stop

Carlsbad Caverns is far from Santa Fe and Albuquerque, so I would not treat it as a casual day trip from northern New Mexico. Build southeastern New Mexico into your route and stay nearby.

That is one reason a car is so useful when exploring the state. Our getting around New Mexico guide explains why several overnight bases usually work better than trying to see everything from one city.

Carlsbad Caverns is worth the detour. Few places demonstrate New Mexico’s variety quite as dramatically.
