New Mexico is the sort of destination where choosing what to leave out can be harder than deciding what to see. The state combines extraordinary landscapes with historic cities, Indigenous culture, art, roadside Americana and some of the most memorable drives in the Southwest.
Explore Santa Fe
Santa Fe deserves more than a quick stop. Its adobe architecture, galleries, museums and historic centre give the city a character that is immediately recognisable. Make time for the Plaza and the surrounding streets, but also wander beyond the most obvious visitor areas.
Experience Albuquerque and Route 66
Albuquerque offers a different pace, with Old Town, museums, a strong food scene and a long connection with historic Route 66. The famous highway is still part of New Mexico’s identity and makes a natural theme for a road trip across the state.
See White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns
White Sands National Park is one of New Mexico’s most distinctive landscapes. Farther southeast, Carlsbad Caverns National Park reveals a vast underground world that could hardly be more different.
Head north to Taos
Taos combines mountain scenery, art and history. The wider area is also an important place for understanding New Mexico’s Native American heritage, including Taos Pueblo. When visiting tribal lands and communities, always respect local rules, closures and photography restrictions.
Leave room for the road
My main advice is not to turn New Mexico into a race between attractions. Choose a region, drive slowly and stop when something catches your attention. Some of the state’s best moments happen between the places you originally put on your itinerary.
